"Kefauver Crime Probe!" -- Facade of the New York Federal building. Gambling and mafia boss Frank "The Prime Minister" Costello arrives for hearing, along with bookmaker Frank Erickson. In hearing room, former New York City Mayor William O'Dwyer is questioned by U.S. Senator Charles Tobey (R-NH). O'Dwyer accuses Senator Tobey of asking for illegal campaign contributions; Tobey denies the claim and offers to take oath. Tobey questions Costello on what he's done as an American citizen; Costello says he's paid his taxes.
Kefauver Crime Probe
"Kefauver Crime Probe!" continued -- Hearing room inside New York Federal building. Kefauver Committee Chief Counsel Rudolph Halley questions Virginia Hill (Bugsy Siegel's girlfriend). Halley asks Hill if she ever received money form Frank Costello or Meyer Lansky; Hill says she has never received money nor spoke to anyone in question. Hill says "she met that Charlie (Lucky Luciano) once or twice, but doesn't even talk to him." Halley asks bookmaker Frank Erickson what his business is; Erickson confers with his lawyer, says he has no business, because he's in jail.
Japanese Peace Treaty Signed
Title Card "Japanese Peace Treaty Signed" -- U.S. President Harry S. Truman speaks before attendees at the War Memorial Opera House for the signing of the Treaty of San Francisco. 48 nations sign the peace treaty with Japan, including Canadian Secretary of State Lester B. Pearson, French Prime Minister Robert Schuman, United Kingdom Deputy Prime Minister Herbert Morrison, and U.S. Secretary of State Dean Acheson. Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Yoshida signs treaty to return sovereignty to Japan, 6 years after it's surrender in World War II. The Soviet Union abstained from signing the treaty.
