David Gergon, US News and World Report in fact if you think about President Reagan s State of the Union Addresses, it s hard to remember particular lines from those speeches There s not going to be lines from his speeches that are going to be up on his graveside the way John Kennedy s lines are carved. But he has enormous ability trough his States of the Union Addresses and his other television speeches, but particularly State of the Union, to really get into the living room and get inside people s heads and talk to their emotions.

January 26, 1982. President Ronald Reagan. Just 2 weeks ago, in the midst of a terrible tragedy on the Potomac, we saw again the spirit of American heroism at its finest the heroism of dedicated rescue workers saving crash victims from icy waters. And we saw the heroism of one of our young government employees, Lenny Skutnik, who, when he saw a woman lose her grip on the helicopter line, dived into the water and dragged her to safety. Lenny Skutnik in President s box.

Robert Squier, media consultant, I had an idea about three months ago that the Democrats could give him terrible trouble by simply deciding they were going to remodel the balcony in the House of Representatives and there would be no balcony to have all those people in and therefor there d be no ending for the Ronald Reagan speech. Wiser heads prevailed. Hodding Carter. It is an effective strategy. Robert Squier, media consultant. Of course it is. It s an effective strategy because what he does is take these great national issues and he reduces them to the life of one person and it s generally a very dramatic life. And it s something that we can identify with as individuals. That s something he is very good at. He uses television as a personal medium. So many people think of it as a mass medium, reaching millions and millions of people. He knows that it s not that at all. It s a medium that reaches one person, alone, generally in a living room. And that s somebody he feels comfortable talking to on that kind of basis.
