Senator Ernest Hollings (D - South Carolina) says he has attended a porn rock show, makes a joke about blaring rock music, and calls the music outrageous filth . I ve had the opportunity to attend a showing , you might say, a presentation of this porn rock , as they call it. In the test of pornography, one of the things to look at is it does not have any redeeming social value. There could be an exception here, because having attended that presentation the redeeming social value I find is that it is inaudible. But in all candor, I will tell you that it s outrageous filth.

Senator Paula Hawkins (R - Florida) Much has changed since Elvis, seemingly innocent times. Subtlety, suggestions and innuendo have given way to overt expressions and descriptions of often violent sexual acts, drug taking and flirtations with the occult.

Susan Baker of the Parents Music Research Center, The material we re concerned about cannot be compared to Louie Louie , Cole Porter, Billie Holiday, etc. Cole Porter s the birds do it, the bees do it , can hardly be compared with Wasp's I F-U-C-K (Baker spell this word out) like a beast .

Senator Al Gore (D - Tennessee) When you responded to the chairman a minute ago, you said there was no way you can tell, in fact some of the material has an album cover design which will indicate it, some does not. Is that correct? Tipper Gore, Parents Music Research Center, That s right. Some of the album covers are very explicit. In fact they look like they should be in Playboy or Penthouse, some of them. And they re in the record bins available to young children. But others, you can t tell. I bought the Purple Rain album for our 11 year old. And I didn t know that Darling Nicki was on it. And I felt that it was inappropriate for her and her 8 and 6 year old sisters to hear a song describing a girl masturbating in a hotel lobby with a magazine. I had no warning. In fact all I new was the Prince was the new creative teen idol on the scene and had just received a Grammy award.

Committee members Senator James Exon (D - Nebraska) I guess the key question that I would like to ask you is, if there is one thing that s come through loud and clear, to me at least, is that you do not want federal legislation and you do not want federal regulation, at least at this time. Is that correct? Tipper Gore, Parents Music Research Center, Yes, that s correct. We do not want legislation to remedy this problem. Senator James Exon (D - Nebraska) Given that, and given what I think I ve tried to put forth as my feelings, Mr. Chairman, I suppose it s nice to have these hearings and discuss these things, because I think it is a concern. But I wonder, Mr. Chairman, if we re not talking about federal regulation, if we re not talking about federal regulation, what is the reason for these hearings in front of the Congressional Committee? Quick pan of hearings audience which includes some long-haired rockers. Senator John Danforth (R - Missouri) I think the point is that there are problems that exist in the country that are not necessarily solved by legislation or by regulation. Fortunately, the be-all and end-all in the United States is not legislation that s enacted by Congress. I think the point of the hearings is to provide a forum for airing what a lot of people perceive as a real problem
