"The recently assembled 85th Congress convenes in joint session to hear President Eisenhower outline his program to meet the Russian threat in the Near East, calling for economic aid and a 'blank check' to use force in the event of Red aggression." Scratchy film. President Dwight D. Eisenhower's speech: "Russia's rulers have long sought to dominate the Middle East. This was true of the czars; it is true of the Bolsheviks. The reasons are not hard to find. Now, these reasons do not affect Russian security, for no one plans to use the Middle East as a base for aggression against Russia. Never for a moment has the United States entertained such a thought. The Soviet Union has nothing whatsoever to fear from the United States in the Middle East or anywhere else in the world so long as its rulers do not, themselves, first resort to aggression." Applause. Edit. "It would, in the third place, authorize such assistance and cooperation to include the employment of the armed forces of the United States to secure and protect the territorial integrity and political independence of such nations requesting such aid against overt armed aggression from any nation controlled by international (not sure what the last word is - Communists?)."

Little girl walks with braces and crutches due to polio.

Ship arrives at dock, where people holding banners wait to greet the freed prisoners of war. Japanese citizens watch urns being unloaded, holding ashes of the dead. Men leap off the ship, embrace loved ones. There are smiles and tears amid the family members.

Her car pulls away.

Sports: Barrel Jumping. One of winter's most exciting, and roughest sports - broad-jumping on ice over a row of barrels. Winner in a contest that features lots of tumbles is defending champ Leo Lebel, clearing 16 kegs to keep his crown. Scratchy film. Ouch! What a painful sport. Many more wipeouts than successes. CU winner with trophy - looks like he has some abrasions on his face.

Eight nations are represented, with the highest-flying of all done by Finland's Pentti Uotinen with a 214 feet jump." Scratchy film. Various ski jumpers compete, gracefully. #16 does winning jump.

State Of The Union: President Reports to 85th Congress. President Eisenhower goes before Congress to deliver his long-awaited address on the 'state of the union,' in which he sees our interests as world-wide and says we must assume leadership in world affairs. We cannot isolate ourselves, he says, but must keep our strength high to deter aggression. Ovation; President Dwight Eisenhower stands before Congress, Vice-President Nixon and another man (presumably Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn) behind him. Ike speaks: "The existence of a strongly armed imperialistic dictatorship poses a continuing threat to the free world's, and thus to our own nation's, security and peace. There are certain truths to be remembered here. First, America, alone and isolated, cannot assure even its own security. We must be joined by the capability and resolution of nations that have proved themselves dependable defenders of freedom. Isolation from them invites war. Our security is also enhanced by the immeasurable interest that joins us with all peoples who believe that peace with justice must be preserved, that wars of aggression are crimes against humanity. Another truth is that our survival in today's world requires modern, adequate, dependable military strength. Our nation has made great strides in assuring a modern defense, so armed in new weapons, so deployed, so equipped that today our security force is the most powerful in our peacetime history. It can punish heavily any enemy who undertakes to attack us. It is a major deterrent to war." Ends abruptly. Importance of allies, alliances, defense capabilities.

His successor is Harold Macmillan, Chancellor of the Exchequer. "Oil fire - Montreal - the eastern section of the city is black with smoke from a million-dollar oil refinery blaze, billowing into the sky. 34 tank cars and 40,000 gallons of gas cause spectacular fire." Aerials of disaster site, black smoke. Ground level shots of the flames, firefighting efforts.

Fashion Parade. "The Millinery Institute of America unveils some charming new bonnets for the coming festive season. Four pretty models display the alluring chapeaux at a special preview." On a spare set with black background, female models show off hats. (The women also have quite fake eyebrows, typical of the era.) Woman looks in mirror, turns to camera with a flat, circle-shaped hat decorated with large roses around the brim. Interesting hat worn close to the head, made of a light fabric with a dark ribbon woven through it - kind of reminds me of Little Red Riding Hood's grandmother, for some reason (only prettier of course). Gigantic hat covered with silk flowers throughout the entire large brim. A model's head piled with grapes, flowers and leaves, the hat fitting tightly to the head; sort of Carmen Miranda-esque. Chiffon turban with scarf draped from it, held in place by an ornamented pin. Intricately designed hat with ribbon looped around to fashion the brim, and netting on top. The four young women smile under less outrageous, smaller floral hats.

Plenty of scrappy action and knock-outs to keep ringsiders on the edge of their seats." Nice low angle shot of one boxer falling toward camera, getting back up. Shot of handful of young men in audience, quite enthusiastic spectators, cheering excitedly. Boxer knocks down Carlos Rodriguez (?), who falls under the ropes and hangs off the edge of the ring, a picture of defeat. Linwood Watson (?) versus Arthur Jones (?); they each knock each other down then finally Watson (in white shorts) loses.

Plane Crashes: Series of Air Tragedies Hit U.S. "3 air tragedies strike the U.S. within 48 hours. At Pacoima, Cal., a transport and jet fighter collide, crashing into a schoolyard, and killing 8, injuring 77 - most of them pupils. In Northern California, a 'flamed-out' jet hits a residential area, damaging 35 homes, but killing only 1. The worst came in New York when a Miami-bound airliner crashed and exploded within seconds after take-off in a blinding snowstorm. 101 were aboard. Twenty were killed, 14 more critically injured." Various shots of wreckage, people walking amid it. At the second location, firefighters still play water hoses, then walk amid the destroyed homes. In New York, snow is falling as rescue workers investigate the disaster scene, remove survivors. Corpses (bodies) covered with blankets lie in the snow.

News in Brief: "Stable Mabel" Stable Mabel, a new one-man helicopter, debuts in Philadelphia. The odd rocket-powered craft demonstrates its controllability with a series of spectacular stunts. Odd flying machine. It's a very small contraption, little more than a chair with some extras, and it produces a sort of circular halo-like cloud as it hovers.

Guests (this researcher couldn't pick out anybody famous) sit at round tables in banquet hall setting. Some priests are among the attendees. Rev. John J. News in Brief: Heart Fund Campaign. Heart fund campaign for 1957 is launched in the nation's capital, as Mrs. Richard Nixon and Dr. Paul Dudley White take part in torchlighting ceremonies. Unusual (kind of funny) little "ceremony" as children bring a prop "torch" to Pat Nixon (Patricia Nixon), who is wearing quite a nice hat. She takes the "torch" and taps the top of a light buld that lights up. Then everybody stands around for the cameras.

Sports: Rodeo. Rough and tumble rodeo at Palm Springs features some terrific tussles between man and beast, with losses and tosses pretty fairly divided. Rodeo clowns shine, luring enraged brahmas away from downed riders.

At Garmisch-Partenkirchem, tiny two-man sleds provide winter sports thrills, streaking down a twisty, glassy track at breath-taking speed, babies in name only - grown-up excitement! Shots of various competitors speeding along icy course, one team takes a spill (doesn't look like it caused any injuries).

Reno Ripped by Violent Gas Blasts. Two die, 55 are injured as a series of explosions from a leaking gas main rock a four-block area in Reno, Nev. Fires in the wake of the blasts consume an entire section of the town, as units from all parts of the state are rushed in to fight the flames. Firefighters spray hoses at burning building. Smoldering ruins, collapsed walls and twisted metal wreckage. Rescue workers attempt to pull a body (?) from beneath an upended car. A high-heeled shoe lies on the ground, and I hope that's not part of the woman's leg still in it. Workers start to dig through the rubble. Horrible tragedy.
